Mouldings

Decorative mouldings run on a gallery beam or moulded capitals and finials on posts can look especially fine.

As is traditional, I carpenter mouldings out of the solid timber of the beam.  I use power tools for some roughing out but the finished mouldings are entirely hand-worked.

Carving

Shaping

To enhance the overall design timbers may be shaped:  Braces may be single or double curved; timbers may be tapered; and exposed beam ends can be contoured.

There are many possible decorative additions to an oak frame which enhance the craft look of the frame.  All decoration takes time and so may be chosen to occur on only one, or just a few, visually prominent timbers.  I add at least simple chamfers to almost all frames.

Dates and Lettering

I often carve my maker’s mark and the date on the frames I make.  I can also letter names and phrases into the timber, as requested.

Carving

Making figurative carvings out of the surface of a solid timber beam is very challenging.  After agreeing the basic design, the client has to trust the craftsman to deliver.  This kind of carving takes planning and time - and the result can be wonderful and unique.

Chamfers

Chamfers are the least expensive way to enhance a frame so they are generally included in our pricing.  Chamfer stops can simply ‘run-out’ or have decorative additions such as barred, pyramidal, lambs-tongue and many more possibilities.
